Garden On Two Levels – Luton
This garden was originally on two levels but with the addition of an extension across the back of the house there was a requirement for the upper level to be pushed back to accommodate a terrace area and access along the back of the house at the lower level.
The brief was to open up the area, creating a feeling of space and calmness with an area large enough for entertaining and to sit in the evening sun. The client wanted a Provençal feel to the garden.
My approach to the design was to create a semi circular area outside the kitchen / dining area which was centred on the concertina doors to create a generous space that the client could step out onto.
Steps from here led both to the shed and onto the lawn area. The remaining retaining walls were planted with soft perennials and herbs.
Towards the other end of the house, a ramp flanked by box balls set in gravel led to the upper terrace which is a larger area for entertaining. A large urn on gravel adds to the Provençal feel.
