The garden to the rear of this Georgian terraced house, whilst not large, sloped away quite steeply and was unusable in its existing state.
The brief was to provide an area for entertaining, an area for the children to play and soft planting. A summerhouse/workshop was being constructed by the client at the end of the garden.

My approach was to create steps leading down from an upper terrace along the rear of the house to a set of curved steps which lead down to a larger circular terrace that was flanked with bricks walls, partly as soil retention but also to create, in part, a sense of cosiness.
A lawn sweeps from the circular terrace to steps leading down onto another level which is the children play area. Further steps lead down to the summerhouse.
A tree adds shade to the main terrace (Amelanchier lamarckii ‘Robin Hill'), soft planting gives a romantic feel and herbs are planted in the raised beds for easy harvesting.
